Arqus Webinar: English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI)

Arqus Webinar

The webinars on English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) are back with a first session titled “Navigating disparate knowledge systems and academic cultures in EMI: Whose responsibility is it?”, by Maynooth University

The opening seminar, delivered by Dr Clive Earls, associate professor in German and applied linguistics at Maynooth University, will be held online on Thursday, 12 December 2024, from 12 noon to 1 pm (CET). This webinar will explore the concept of knowledge systems in higher education and their role in supporting EMI students’ success.

Participants will gain insights into the potential of intercultural pedagogies to engage with learners’ diverse knowledge systems and explore strategies to foster productive, reciprocal interactions in EMI classrooms.

About the speaker

Dr Clive Earls is an associate professor in German and applied linguistics at the School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures at Maynooth University. His 2016 research monograph, published by Palgrave MacMillan, investigates English-medium higher education in Germany, drawing on interdisciplinary methodologies from applied linguistics, internationalisation, sociolinguistics, especially language policy and planning, intercultural studies, and language pedagogy. Dr Earls is also the principal investigator of the national study on Gender Equality in Language Studies in Ireland (GELS).

Registration for online participation is required. Register here.
