Language models such as ChatGPT are changing the way we live and work. This also has an impact on academic writing. This is because AI systems can provide initial sentences for blank pages, correct texts and help with the formulation of arguments.
The downside: ChatGPT and the like can also facilitate "cheating" in academic writing and provide false information and unverified sources. It is therefore all the more important to prepare students to use AI correctly and responsibly. But how can this be done?
The Arqus online workshop "Teaching AI-supported Academic Writing" is designed to help teachers. The practical aspects of integrating AI-related tools and methods into the classroom will be demonstrated. Participants should bring their syllabus and some ideas on how they would like to incorporate AI into their teaching. Possible teaching scenarios and transparent communication of what is expected of students will be discussed.
These are the aims of the workshop
After the workshop, participants will...
... have reflected on the impact of AI on academic writing and student development
... recognise different scenarios for teaching students how to use AI ethically and responsibly
... have initial ideas on how to revise their curriculum accordingly
