The European idea is closely linked to the creation, preservation and discussion of cultural heritage. Since the 19th century, cultural heritage has played a central role in shaping European nations.
However, the general understanding of cultural heritage has become more complicated in recent decades due to post-colonial debates, political transitions and social changes as well as the rise of populist nationalism in Europe and the impact of the digital revolution and climate change.
