How does motherhood impact mothers’ lives? What are the main challenges that migrant mothers face in their daily lives, and how can we get a better understanding of this complex experience? These are the questions at the heart of Eglė Kačkutė’s research on motherhood studies, which looks into the stereotypical but still relevant care chains, into who is caring for the very young and the elderly, under which circumstances and their sustainability in the future.

For the 26th episode of the Arqus Knowledge Pills “How does motherhood impact migrant mothers’ lives?”, we invited Eglė Kačkutė, Associate Professor in French and Migration Studies at Vilnius University, Researcher at the Camille Jordan Institute and also the coordinator of Horizon-2020 funded research network “MotherNet”. In this episode, we dive into the relevance of motherhood studies in the understanding of historical and current societal events.

“MotherNet” is a network of scholars working in different fields, who try to synergize research and transdisciplinary studies to understand the complex experiences of motherhood outside the stereotypical concept of a “mother”: married, heterosexual, middle-class, in her mid-30s and with 2 young children. It dives into the understanding of mothering and the complexity of that experience, and the ways in which it is regulated culturally, ideologically and legally.
