On 15th October 2021, the Universities of Graz and Padua start a new activity at the Arqus Alliance

A joint workshop series for staff at partner universities in order to increase their language and cross-cultural competence and to ensure inclusive and gender-appropriate language.

From October 2021 through to June 2022, lecturers of the Arqus universities will present topics related to language and cross-cultural competence.

“Gender and Diversity Sensitive Didactics for Language Teachers”

What does gender and diversity literacy mean? What can inclusive, non-discriminatory teaching look like? How can I make my material, my teaching and my language more diversity-sensitive and gender-responsive?

The first of these workshops will be organised by the University of Graz on gender and diversity specific challenges and teaching methods, with the objective of developing the training skills of academics and professors that can positively impact their learning environments and enable the inclusion of all groups in the classrooms.

Target group:

Foreign language teachers and trainers of Arqus universities.

Workshop leader:

Lisa Mercedes Mittischek, MA; lecturer at the University of Graz; consultant and workshop leader for gender competence, gender-sensitive didactics and intersectionality.

Programme:

The workshop is structured along the following topics:

  • What does gender and diversity literacy mean?
  • Which theories and methods are used?
  • How can your own teaching benefit from gender and diversity competence?
  • What can inclusive, non-discriminatory teaching look like?
  • How can I make my material, my teaching and my language more diversity-sensitive and gender-responsive?

Phases of input and plenary discussion will be alternated with phases of exchange via Google Forms and regular short screen breaks.

Date and time:

Friday, 15th October 2021, 2-6 p.m. (CEST time).

Workshop format:

Online (Zoom).

Registration:

Please register here by 8th October 2021.

Participants will receive an invitation to a Zoom meeting in a timely manner.

Fee:

The workshop is free of charge for staff members of the Arqus Alliance partner universities.

Contact:

For any enquiries, please contact simone.klinge(at)uni-graz.at.

Please note: In order to ensure the quality of the session and for the benefit of the participants, we limit the number of participants for this workshop to a maximum of 18 people. Two places are reserved for each of the seven partner universities, ensuring equal representation. Workshop places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. If there are less than two registrations from one university, remaining places will be allocated in list order.

This is the first of a new series of workshops to be offered in the framework of the Action Line 4 of Arqus, Multilingual and multicultural university (sub-line 4.5), led by Leipzig University. These workshops target academic and administrative staff at partner universities and focus on specific topics ranging from working and teaching through the medium of English, intercultural awareness in the classroom and outside, to inclusive language.
