This call for research funding is intended to strengthen existing or facilitate new research collaborations between the Arqus partner universities and at the same time benefit early-stage researchers, who are a core target group of Arqus. The long-term objective of the call is to establish sustainable research collaborations between the Arqus partner universities that will have the potential to attract competitive (European) funding.
Target group
This call addresses all researchers affiliated to an Arqus university who wish to set up a collaborative research project with researchers from other Arqus universities. Both cooperation partners must be eligible to supervise doctoral candidates. The thematic scope of the projects is not restricted.
Please be aware that the following details reflect institutional, local, and national regulations and requirements which are binding to the Arqus University you are applying to and which might deviate amongst Arqus partners.
Funding framework
Funding can only be provided for personnel costs for 1 PhD position (doctoral candidate, 75%) plus training and material costs of up to € 5.000 per year for a maximum of 3 years.
Requirements

Applications must demonstrate cooperation between researchers from two Arqus universities willing to jointly supervise a doctoral candidate (where appropriate, in the form of a cotutelle de thèse).

The project must include a compulsory period of mobility for the doctoral candidate of at least 6 months to the other Arqus university.

The PhD candidate is expected to be appointed in 2024.

Submission
All application documents must be submitted in PDF format to arqus@uni-graz.at by 30 April 2024 (23:59 local time). All applications received by this date will be formally reviewed by local Arqus officers and, if complete, forwarded to a review panel. Please note that the review panel does not necessarily have to be from the specific scientific discipline of the proposal.
Approval
End of June 2024.
Number of eligible projects per Arqus university
1-2 Arqus project(s) will be funded by the University of Graz.
Reporting
The local Arqus office must be notified of all Arqus PhD candidates appointed. The PhD candidate will be required to submit an interim report after 1,5 years and a final report at the end of the project. Detailed guidelines and reporting templates will be made available in due course.
