Academic English before Christmas

Leipzig University holds a series of workshops on academic English before the winter break

Courses in English for academic purposes are becoming more important at university as students are aware of the need to acquire the language skills needed for academic success. In this five-part mini-series of workshops with different topics, students of all seven Arqus partner universities will have the chance to improve their skills in academic English. The number of participants is limited to 15.

To register, please send an email to: m.waltie(at)uni-leipzig.de before 12 pm (noon) of the day of the workshop. The instructor will send a Zoom link to the participants by email each day by 16:00 for that day's workshop.

Workshop II: Writing up Results and Methods in English. 15.12.2020, 17:00-18:00 CET

Workshop III: Pronunciation Skills Practice in English. 17.12.2020, 17:00-18:00 CET

Students often find particular words very difficult to pronounce in English. Having an accent is not the problem, while being correctly understood is the aim. Join us to tackle some common pronunciation challenges in part III of the five-part mini-series: Academic English before Christmas.

Workshop IV: Academic Discussions in English. 18.12.2020, 17:00-18:00 CET

Students often find it difficult to participate successfully in academic discussions in English due to shyness or lack of grammar knowledge and vocabulary. Together we will take on some of the most common academic discussion challenges in part IV of the five-part mini-series: Academic English before Christmas.

Workshop V: Presenting your Academic Project in English. 21.12.2020, 17:00-18:00 CET

One of the most difficult challenges students face is presenting their project in English due to lack of appropriate language skills and too little practice in conventions and vocabulary. Join us to gain practical tips for presenting successfully in English in part V of the five-part mini-series: Academic English before Christmas.

There are no requirements for this courses. Students may take part in any or all of the five workshops in this series. The use of a web-camera and microphone will facilitate discussions so participants are asked to have access to functioning equipment.
